Can you send an email from the command line using sendmail?

the voicemail application to send emails.
I am pretty sure that my config files are ok, because I used them on a
different embedded device and everything was OK.
Is it possible to make the voicemail application log more
information so I
can try to figure out what's going on ? Currently it doesn't write
anything
in /var/log/asterisk/messages (/opt/var/log/asterisk/messages for
NSLU2).
For the mail transport I tried using both the esmtp package and the
mini_sendmail package.
