I've tried freephoneline, seems ok but to use anything other than the
windows client you have to make the payment for a settings file with your
account name and password. I'm guessing after you pay then you authenticate
against some other server than the one used by the Windows client. Yes, I
tried with only a small effort to get my free account to work from Asterisk
- no joy. Beyond the free side I've not had experience with them. Website -

Another possibility is vbuzzer that I actually do use for our home line and
it's been acceptable. It has not been acceptable for a friend that shares a
wireless connection in her apartment but that has nothing to do with
Vbuzzer. Vbuzzer can be used with their windows client - a necessity if you
plan to use the vbuzzer voicemail and want to set a custom greeting with
them or it will work with Asterisk, ata adapters, and wireless voip phones.
I've tried my account on a Nokia phone and it worked well. Vbuzzer customer
service can take a while to respond to issues though and that may be
important if you need support. Website - vbuzzer.com

I'll keep reading and am also interested to see what others are using and
the experiences with those services.
