Hi folks,
I have a very small company and have been in business for 13 years,
primarily as a data VAR. We've been installing Linux servers since
1997.
A couple of years ago, we started offering offering VOIP phone systems,
but we don't have much of an installed base yet. We have been using
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Trixbox) as well as a system from MKC Networks not based
on Asterisk.
We desire to offer small businesses a new (standardized) voice platform
that might compete with traditional phone phone and key systems in terms
of reliability. I recently ran across ASTLinux and, at first glance, it
looks like a great place to start on the software side of things.
Assuming we use ASTLinux as our software base, I'd like to ask for
recommendations for the hardware side. I have a few items I think would
be important. If any of you think I should add other items to this
list, PLEASE suggest them. As I mentioned we have some experience in
this area, but we would really appreciate the comments of those with
more/other experience.
I thank you in advance for your comments,
G
Desirable Features
==================
Low Cost - primarily for small/medium businesses
- quality/reliability/performance are most important
- not interested in false-economy
Mini-ITX - looks like a great way to go
- have no experience with it
No Moving Parts - reliability
Ethernet Ports - two or more desired
- built-in or add-on
- 'router' mode desireable
PCI Slots - two preferred
- allows use of Digium TDM400P, Wildcard or Sangoma A100
- not absolutely necessary if we use external gateways
External USB - you know why
External CF - desirable but not necessary
1GHz+ CPU - performance has to be good
- we don't really know what is required here
- may depend of other design choices as yet unknown
- ideally would support full T1 of voice
Digital I/F - have used Digium and Sangoma (data) products in past
- small businesses usually only need 4-10 lines
- ideally would support channelized T1
- some data
- some voice
- need service provider recommendations
- is reliability better for internal or external?
