replying to my own message: The nice folks at PC Engines say

"Four reasons:

- One more thing to break...
- tinyBIOS doesn't use CMOS RAM to store setup (safely stored in flash)
- time servers...
- limited shelf life / recycling hassles"

So I guess I was wrong about losing BIOS settings, so the main hassle is 
losing the date and time. I know, run ntpdate at boot. :) 

This is going to take some getting used to!
