I am successfully running Astlinux on the older Via C3 processor without
issues ... I am somewhat familiar with iBase as a company and can tell you
that their single board computers are pretty decent ... they have been
around for while and are pretty well known in the industrial computer
segment ... typically, their stuff is a bit more expensive that consumer
grade product but tends to be sturdier ...

bottom line is I hope you go with it and report back your experience ... I
suspect you will find it does quite a nice job of it ... I am not sure I
would spring for the LAN bypass option myself as I dont think it would serve
any purpose for me ... and if your purpose is to use if for Astlinux or
maybe pFsense, then 1gb of RAM would be overkill but nice to have ...

Subject: [Astlinux-users] VIA Processor

Hi AstLinux Folks:

I appreciate all the great feedback I get from this group. I see
the 2.5 HD discussion keeps going.

New question: I have found a pretty nice appliance: FWA-7304 - Has anyone
ever worked with this product? How does the VIA processor compare with the
Soekris Net 4801?

Description:
FWA7304 comes with VIA Eden-V4 processor, 1GHz using a 400MHz front size bus
and a DDR2 SO-DIMM socket accommodating up to 1GB memory, offering 18-20%
increased network performance levels when compared with VIA Eden-based
appliances. The unit does not require any active cooling, offering much
higher reliability and longer life span compared with existing network
security platforms.
Designed for the Small-Medium Business (SMB) market, FWA7304 supports a LAN
bypass function that helps ensure all network traffic passing through the
device in the event of power failure. The unit supports flexible data
storage with a Compact Flash socket and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive. The
onboard Mini PCI slot offers an upgrade path for additional products like
wireless modules.
Thanks

Andy
