Of course, you are correct.
Once I generated the key disk properly, the first reboot generated the
keys, and from then on it does not.
Thanks again

I think the keys normally are stored on the usb keydisk. If things
are working right they should be saved. I don't know exactly why
yours isn't working right.

Though I couldn't exactly do it the way you suggested, due to some cryptic
error regarding "magic" I did manage to get the flash configured, the USB
pen drive set up for the config files, and am now in the process of working
on the configs.
Thanks for the push in the right direction.
Next question:
As in DSL, AstLinux seems to want to generate new rsa keys each time it
boots, which to me seems un-necessary and a pain.
Any easy way to prevent that, and continue to use keys established on first
boot?
I eventually was successful in doing this with DSL. Perhaps a similar/same
method will work with AstLinux?
Remember to Keep it simple, I am into Telephony, not so much Linux.
TIA

Assuming you get get the system to boot in one way or another (DSL
boot CD should work) all you should really have to do is make sure
that the flash isn't mounted, download the latest Astlinux from Source
Forge and then
gunzip -c /path/to/astlinux.img.gz > /dev/sda
replacing sda with whatever device your flash memory is.
Hope that helps

I have been using Asterisk for some time now, but just started to explore
AstLinux, and after some searching of the archives, have a problem.
I want to install AstLinux on a thin client, one of the HP 5000 series.
This machine had Windows CE installed in flash, which makes it generally
useless! AstLinux with external SIP/IAX telephony interfaces would make a
neat low power and cheap setup.
This machine has a 64 M Flash that looks like an IDE drive, and in fact
have been able with a cable to unplug the flash memory and plug in a 4 Gig
drive with AstLinux installed on another machine. The box also has 128 M
memory ( 112 usable ) so it seems to work well with the HD.
I really think it is slick so I wanted to then move to booting from the
flash and use a USB pen drive for the configs, rather than keep the 4 Gig
drive on the machine.
I then attempted to use the Live CD install connected through a USB port,
but it fails with messages such as: ( paraphrased )
Can't identify CD-Rom format
( this is after it begins the boot process, so I know it can read the CD )
Then it complains about the console, and stops without finishing either the
liveCD or install process.
This is a puzzle, as I was able to install DSL ( Damn Small Linux ) from
IT'S CD with no complaints.
I can successfully boot from a USB pen drive with the I586.img installed,
but don't know enough about Linux to get AstLinux installed to the Flash,
assuming that can even be done from the img version.
Is there a way to use the iso version on a pen drive?
Is there a way to do an install to hda1 ( flash ) when booting from the
sda1 (pen drive) ?
Keep in mind that I am more of a Telephony guy than a Linux guy, so keep it
simple!
The Flash memory has a socket, rather than pins as a 2.5 HD has, so another
brick wall. It seems no one makes a male to male 44 pin adapter. If they do,
I have yet to find it.
Any answers on or off list are welcome.
