Mike, Gumstix support has not been touched in a long time. Gumstix is a very powerful platform but I still have not been able to find a practical use for AstLinux on Gumstix hardware. With that being said, none of the developers (myself included) regularly build for Gumstix. It doesn't surprise me it's badly broken. We should probably just remove Gumstix support altogether...
