To add to what Darrick said, some of the work is also just about 
bouncing around ideas and nitty gritty details about how we want to 
change the system moving forward...  the complexities of configuring 
certain packages and getting scripts wrapped around these to simplify 
and automate everyday tasks...  things of that nature.

You don't have to be a C programming guru or a makefile expert to 
contribute.

Sometimes being able to download, test, troubleshoot, and accurately 
diagnose problems with recent changes (and regressions) can be invaluable.

And if all you want to do is sit on the mailing list, and contribute an 
occasional comment or insight, that's fine too.  At least we'll know 
we're not working in a vacuum.
