I have built 1.6 without issue. just be aware that in the 1.6 that ships
with astlinux (1.6.2.7) if you are using SIP trunks you may run into a bug
that seems to be occurring a lot. and that is you will after a while get
an error "address family not supported" and your outbound SIP trunk call
will fail. it is a bug in 1.6 that is supposed to be permanent in 1.6.2.9
There is a patch for it and I found you need to download and put that patch
into your packages / asterisk directory . astlinux did not have that patch
included as of build 4003 which is the last one I built.. not sure if it
has been added since or not..

You can pick the packages you wish to install when you "make menuconfig"
(Asterisk 1.6 is one of the options), I haven't tried to build 1.6, but the
options there
