Nedi,

The PERSISTLOG variable controls whether logs are written to ramdisk or 
the flash. If PERSISTLOG=yes, then it creates (or uses the existing) 
/mnt/kd/log and symlinks /var/log to it. Normally /var lives in ram, so 
this brings it back onto the flash. If you don't have this variable set 
to yes, then all of your logs will be flushed on reboot.
