Short investigation shows that 

CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC=y

should be set in the kernel. As I see there is no such option set in Astlinux 
kernel.

Which is the simpliest way to get around this? Should I recompile the whole 
distro or kernel?

Maybe this option should be included in Astlinux by default?
