It is a lot more complicated than just enabling CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC 
(actually CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_OPTION).

The developers have played around with supporting USB 3G modems in the past.

One of the problems is that these USB 3G modems are actually combo flash drives 
(by default) and USB 3G modems, "flip flop" (multiple device), that somehow the 
industry thought was a good idea.

There is a Linux tool to switch "flip flop" (multiple device) USB gear called 
"usb_modeswitch"...

but that has issues for us as well.  It was decided this functionality was not 
a good fit for AstLinux.

The high price of 3G data, and poor quality (high latency) is another negative.
