To be clear, it's not activated by default. From my own tests in the past I 
rememember, that there must be the  "option" module added in the linux.config 
as well and loaded in "rc.modules" to recognize USB UMTS Sticks.

But USB support for mass storage devices etc. was always supported by Astlinux.
