I took a fresh AstLinux 1.0.2 (Asterisk 1.8) and it worked as described for me.

You didn't edit any files non-/mnt/kd/ files, change permissions, etc. ?

You restarted asterisk after making the http.conf edits ?

Feel free to post your http.conf file again and what URL are you using ?
