I've always just used 'dd'. You should have it on your BSD box.

"On Linux or *BSD use dd to transfer the image to the CF card. (gunzip the
image, then dd if=astlinux-XXX.img of=/dev/sdX where sdX is your compact
flash card)."
Same should work fine on an ATA drive. Just make sure it's not mounted, and
you'll need to be root.
