I have used system rescue cd. Burned to a usb stick tbere are easy instructions 
to make a stick of it. It has all kinds of utilities for partitioning copying 
and the ljke. Ddrescue being the easiest and seems always get the mbr correct. 

In my own setup now i actually wrote my own init script and boot linux from a 
pxe boot from the jetway.. and automates the install process even down to 
collecting info about the board and storing in a sql db....
