I assume you are not seeing "error mounting astlinux-1.1.6.run rootfs" anymore ?

I'm wondering if your internal 1GB flash module has a few bad cells, and the 
exercising with /dev/zero and installing AstLinux is getting those cells 
flagged to be ignored. (only a guess)

Configuring AstLinux with "separate" partitions is the way I configure all my 
systems, the only disadvantage for your case is your somewhat small 1 GB flash 
storage and "combined" shares the space a little better, but if your current 
"separate" partition setup is working and not showing disk errors, all is well. 
 Even with only 500 MB of flash storage for the /mnt/kd partition, you can do a 
lot.

If you already have some Asterisk experience you are off to the races, if not, 
take your time learning.
