I am naive here, but email yes I could possibly understand that, use it with 
voice mail, just means another application running on the computer and not 
going to the phone (PC Softphone). But possible wait time for receiving emails 
from server typical 15 mins refresh etc.

XMPP
Have been reading my book on asterisk and am I correct in thinking that I need 
an external server to provide this service, my book suggests talk.google,com  
so external resources needed.

Found the JabberSend  command and assumed that is what you were referring to?

Reading more on the SendText, there was no option to send off to another 
extension and it reads it is meant for an in-call message, so dropping that 
idea all together.

Looking at the sms looks again like an external server to mobile phones etc 
not asterisk phones.

It may be just using the resources of just my astlinux box, a couple of sip 
phones and my linux softphone I can not do what I have in mind.

I will have a rethink.
