Hi,

I recently purchased a ChromeBook to learn about Chrome OS, hearing good things
as an inexpensive IT guy's companion.

It takes a little time to figure out what Chrome OS can and can't do, but the
killer App is the fully accessible Linux underneath with "Developer Mode"
enabled.
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-enable-developer-mode-on-a-chromebook/

A basic ChromeBook, with USB->Serial, USB3->ethernet and USB3->SATA dongles is
a very useful set of tools for AstLinux deployment and management.

My Hardware example...

Toshiba CB35-B3340 13.3-Inch Chromebook 2 (HD IPS screen):

FTDI USB to Serial Cable (FTDI chipset):

USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter (ASIX AX88179 Chipset):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FFJ0RKE/

USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/ UASP
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJZJI84/

My Software example...

* Serial
Beagle Term, Free in the Chrome App Store
https://github.com/beagleterm/beagle-term

* Write Images to Flash Media
Chrome OS "chromeos-ssd-write" script:
http://lonnie.abelbeck.com/astlinux/info/chromeos-ssd-write.php

Special note, I finished this "chromeos-ssd-write" script today, tested with
various USB thumb drives, CF cards and SATA drives, please report any issues.

The good...

The price !

Almost instant on from 'sleep', 'startup' in about 5 seconds !

I like the 1920x1080 IPS display, but the text can get small at times, but it
is crisp and sharp, and a wide viewing angle. After awhile you learn the
shortcuts to change the browser zoom, and the zoom-level is recorded by URL
site.

Additional developer packages can be added via "dev_install", such as iperf3,
screen, etc. More info...

The not so good...

Sadly, one glaring missing feature of the current Chrome OS is a GUI setup for
OpenVPN client, while "openvpn --config chromebook.ovpn" works from the CLI,
I'm puzzled why the current GUI *almost* works, but not fully. Hopefully this
will be remedied in the near future.

If the ChromeBook goes to sleep while Beagle Term is connected via a USB
dongle, it seems Beagle Term must be quit and restarted to reattach to the
serial port.

Conclusion...

While I've only had my ChromeBook for less than a week, it is set to replace my
aging MacBook on my lab bench for AstLinux testing.

Lonnie
