Sorry to say but both options did not work.

I performed mount -o remount,rw /oldroot/cdrom on the server and updated ver as 
you mentioned. I rebooted the system and it never returned ☹ Completely broke 
it.
I was REALLY lucky that it was on a VM that was being backed up so the snapshot 
was easily returned but boy I could have been in a pickle.

The second option also did not work. It just returned to the original Asterisk 
version when I reverted back to 1.2.7.

Any other options?

Then you can either change

"/oldroot/cdrom/os/ver" to an older version, and after the upgrade delete Xver. 
(You'll have to mount the volume as "rw" first)

or you could try our latest beta at:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/beta.astlinux-project/ast11-firmware-1.x

and then go back to 1.2.7 if you want.
