I'm part of Telephone Collectors International. There's a few other members
who occasionally post on this list. People in our group have all kinds of
old/weird/interesting telephone company equipment hooked up to a private VOIP
network. Quite a few of us are happily using Astlinux. If any of that sounds
interesting to you, you can dial around the network through the PSTN. More

My general assumption was that you were using a cordless phone (one of
the few remaining applications for an ATA that I see) or some
who-knows-what mass manufactured device with bargain basement
components.
