Tonight I went to where there is an access point I can use and tried again. This PC and wireless card have worked before under Linux, but I'm not sure if it was the same driver version. First I verified that it would work under Windows. It did, although the signal is weak and it would drop out sometimes. Then I tried ifconfig wlan0 up, iwlist wlan0 scan, and iwconfig wlan0 essid any (and essid auto and some other variations) Here is output from the commands
