Thank you for your response.
I installed linux-backports-modules-intrepid and rebooted.
For a moment it looked as though the wifi connection had succeeded (looking at
the wireless icon on my router) but I was unable to ping anything (google, the
router, etc).
Now, "sudo iwconfig wlan0 scan" gives me this:
