I'm afraid this is quite consistent with my experience from wireless in Linux ever since I switched from iwl2915/3945 hardware and drivers. Cisco AIR-CAP3502I-A-K9 APs are an exception and work reliably with all hardware and drivers I've tried. With other APs wpa_supplicant is quite eager to disconnect. I also debugged a little and at least in one case wpa_supplicant disconnects as a reaction to something the AP sends.
