If you haven't had an answer, this is what I recommend.  Pull from the top or 
the bottom on the thermostat.  The front piece will then come off.  You will 
need four double A batteries.  Even though you are getting the message, it 
allows for, I think three weeks.  If they go completely dead, you will, of 
course, have to enter your programs if you use that feature.  If you change 
them soon, nothing should be lost.  Hope this helps.  If is not a good enough 
explanation, give me a call, I've replaced ours.
