I should have said that these commands will work only while you are using
Winamp.

You can do an alt control slash to increase the volume to 100%.

Alt control period to 66%.

Alt control Comma to 33%.

Alt control m to mute.

The only thing I know of that has changed is I am hard-wired into our modem
now to keep this computer online, but obviously,  something else is wrong;
speaker volume is at 100 percent.  I am using Windows 7 on a PC (Dell
desktop) with winamp as my default media player.
