May I ask where this is specified in RFC 4287? I cannot find any such restriction.

4.1.2 bullet 7:

atom:entry elements MUST NOT contain more than one atom:link
     element with a rel attribute value of "alternate" that has the
     same combination of type and hreflang attribute values.
