If you are right, I take this as meaning RSS2.0 Atom doesn't require extensibility. They only require modularity, which XML+Namespaces provides.

For the most common use case - news updates - that's the case. I can't really speak to other potential uses. However, I tend to take a dim view of functionality that is intended for "future needs" - we tend to be very bad at predicting real future needs
