I accept there are cases where it might be useful to associate
significance to document order, such as 'Top 10' . But I can't think
of any which couldn't be better fulfilled by being explicit within the
entries/feed.

The killer problem of using doc order is that the feed data *will* be
aggregated and republished. Far better to declare the information in
the data (like the date) and let the client (or intermediary) sort
according to the user's requirements.

In a case like Top 10 an extension would be appropriate, link
rel=first/next/previous being one way, RSS 1.0-style feed level
<items><Seq>... being another.
