I don’t know that you can defend that in any way.

I see no grounds on which it can be argued that serving an XML
document as `application/xml` is wrong. Atom is XML. Hence it
cannot be said that serving Atom as `application/xml` is wrong.

It’s not preferrable – no question about that.
