I had this same problem as well, but a reboot fixed it for me.
After setting up lirc I tested out the buttons and saw that lirc would
interpret the signal for the wrong button. After setting up lirc
several times I just rebooted the system and voila.
I have Ubuntu hardy installed with XBMC.
