Maybe this will help other noobs-like-me who are out there. :-) I couldn't get the kexec syntax/params right so I moved on to try an external USB install of Ubuntu 8.04. With the boot param set to "auto", the grub menu.lst either wasn't being found or was somehow bogus. Last night I wiped the internal PATA and managed to successfully install Ubuntu 8.04. woot. I guess that somewhere in the past, I must have messed up grub on the PATA.
