I'm going to answer my own question.  syslinux.cfg files are supported
in auto mode, but it seems that you need to tweak the sysconfig.cfg
file for it to work.  Ultimately I used the manual boot mode and set
the kexec parameters to what I needed.

Anyway, I got ubuntu mobile booting from the usb stick on the atv.  It
looks nice, but it doesn't look like it uses the restricted nvidia
driver so my xorg.conf doesn't work.  :(

All it took was to correctly copy the all of the files to the usb
partition.  The .disk file is especially important!

I may try the even smaller ubuntu mobile version, but I have a feeling
it also doesn't support the restricted driver so it won't be very
interesting.
