Yea, mine does that too half way through the boot process, but once X is running it goes black, but then I have to unplug and replug my TV's hdmi port. Then I can see the graphics, I'm sure its an artiface of a chep 19" TV I'm on right now. aplay -l shows the ATI HDMI device, and speaker-test lets me send data to plughw:0,3 but nothing comes out the speakers. What is weird is that before I built and installed alsa 1.0.18a, I had an hdmi alias listed under aplay -L, now I don't anymore.
