Stuttering while displaying HD with the OSD on the screen is a known
problem, if that helps.  It sounds like all the situations you
describe would include the OSD being shown.  Basically, not enough
grunt to decode HD video and display the OSD at the same time.

In addition I find that there is another special case which causes
this to happen even when HD is not shown - it seems to relate to
whether I wait for the preview to display before starting playback.
If I wait for the preview to start playing and maybe a couple of extra
seconds, no problem when the OSD is off.  If I start viewing the
recording before the preview has started playing then even when the
OSD is off it skips.

My guess, based on periodic scanning of the dev list, is there is/was
a bug related to the live preview consuming CPU even after the
recording is playing back and this might be related.  I would further
guess that allowing the preview to start allows it to be stopped
before playing the recording.
