yes, this is possible.  I do it all the time.

did you copy the .boot directory to the flash drive?  it seems to me
that most of the image booting issues (myself included) are due to
improperly copying the files.  I had this exact problem this
weekend.

try another usb stick, if you have one.

you kexec line looks ok.  what resolution do you have the atv set to?
all atv's have the same hardware, the age is irrelevant.

it seems like your usb stick is setup correctly because it is trying
to boot an image.

keep at it.  it can be done.
