Hi, I'm experimenting with the ATV bootloader and would like to try
running linux (Ubuntu Jaunty for starters) as a live 'CD' from a USB
stick, i.e. without installing Jaunty to the HDD - preferably I'd like
to make as few changes to the HDD as I can get away with. My first
question is - is this possible? The reason I ask is because most
people seem to have performed a full install to HDD.
I've followed the instructions at
http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/BootingLiveCD
including the "Do I really need a USB CD/DVD drive" section. Using
Ubuntu 9.04 live CD image the result is a partial boot which
eventually drops back to busybox after the line "sd 2:0:0:0: Attached
scsi generic sg1 type 0" - I assmue this indicates a failed boot as I
would have expected an Ubuntu prompt, not a busybox one.
Using the Ubuntu (Jaunty) Net installer image (as suggested elsewhere
in this group) results in the "choose your language" page of the
installation process as would be expected, however I don't want to do
an install.
For what its worth, the response from running
kexec --load tmp/casper/vmlinuz --initrd=tmp/casper/initrd.gz --
command-line="preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz
nosplash vesa video=vesafb"
is
setup_linux_vesafb: 720x480x32 @ 10018000 +2d0000

 - other people seem to report a higher resolution, does this indicate
older hardware on my ATV?

All help & suggestions appreciated,
Mike
