Surprised nobody here could help out! Still, in case anyone else has
similar problems, I am posting my solutions:
(1)  Installer problems
     Turned out not due to dodgy CDROM drive, or dodgy CD, or USB hub.
     The mythbuntu 8.04 installer failed part way through because of
running out
     of memory. I did not define a swap partition, as I was intending
to create
     a swap file post install - I didn't realise the installer itself
would
     make use of a swap partition, but it clearly does need to.
     So, I repartitioned the disk. Partitions 1-4 are still standard
AppleTV,
     P5 is linux, and P6 is 1GB of swap.

(2) boot=auto still doesn't work for me. I have settled on the
following:
     (in com.apple.Boot.plist on USB stick)
         <string>atv-boot=manual video=vesafb</string>
     (in boot_linux.sh on USB stick)
     #!/bin/bash
     #
     echo "this is a boot_linux.sh script"
     echo "I should boot Mythbuntu from internal disk (/dev/sda5)..."
     #
     #
     mkdir -p /tmp/rootfs
     mount /dev/sda5 /tmp/rootfs
     kexec --load /tmp/rootfs/vmlinuz --initrd=/tmp/rootfs/initrd.img
\
     --command-line="root=/dev/sda5 initrd=initrd.img nosplash vesa
video=vesafb"
     umount /tmp/rootfs
     kexec -e

Finally, I have Mythbuntu 8.04 booting up on the ATV! Now all I have
to do is get it to work! (Just sound, IR...details)
