Thanks Scott, atvtool works beautifully.

Regarding the CF<->IDE adapter , mine is a bit fancy
since there's an activity LED and a jumper to set
master/slave, though I'm not sure I can have a
cable select mode.

Another thing might be the appleTV firmware; it's been
ages I haven't upgraded the firmware (last time I used
it was 2 years ago), so I might try that, even though
I'm not sure what will be upgraded.  Is there anything
like flash memory on the appleTV that is upgraded, or
is everything on the hard disk ?  Are all the boot.efi
the same ?
