I now have created a patchstick to recover my ATV. I used the guide
and have got the USB patchstick set up with two partitions one hfs
plus and one ext3. They are loaded per the instructions.

I booted my ATV and the auto failed, as expected and the telnet daemon
started. However I can't seem to telnet in.

I am connected from my linux laptop to the ATV via ethernet. The
telnet daemon sees the ethernet connection.

I opened Terminal, and typed telnet, and got the telnet> prompt

I typed open appletv and got

telnet> open appletv
Trying 192.168.1.76...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host

192.168.1.76 was the IP address assigned by my router when I had wifi
connection before I screwed everything up.

I think I can follow the directions once I can get logged in.

Can you point me the right way?

telnet need a wired connection, not wireless. When the patchstick boots and starts up the telnet daemon, it outputs the IP address that is gets from DHCP, use that address. It will most likely be different from your wireless IP address.
