OK,
I've got 9.10 install and have told the bootloader to start the
2.6.31-19 kernel through a customized menu.lst as in step 6 of
http://wiki.eple.us/appletv_ubuntu_9.10_xbmc.

I want to know what repository for xbmc to use and if I should use a
repository install for the video driver or if I should use the envyng-
core install of 185?

This gets you svn trunk

# Add XBMC PPA
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc-svn

I don't believe 185 will compile under karmic so forget about 185. Use envyng to install 190, just like http://wiki.eple.us/appletv_ubuntu_9.10_xbmc does. Now if you are running component, my guess is it will not come up correctly and you will have to edit xorg.conf to force component.

If there are any other pointers thus far I would greatly appreciate
it.
Also would using component as opposed to the HDMI/optical combiniation
make things alot more complicated?

For component output, you force it. see http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/atvdisplay

For HDMI, the nvidia driver will ask you TV what it can do.
