Taht is the error message I get after

sudo apt-get xbmc-live

Log into xbmc user

xinit xbmc-standalone

Was installing xbmc-live the wrong answer? I don't know of any other
way to get xbmc-standalone.

Why are you installing xbmc-live ? http://wiki.eple.us/appletv_ubuntu_9.10_xbmc does not mention anything about that ?

sudo apt-get install xbmc

you need to look a little closer at "exec xbmc -standalone", there's a space after xbmc. This is a command to launch xbmc with the "-standalone" flag.
