No, it can only play what is on the backend, and for some reason, I
think myth-frontend does a better job playing HD content than XBMC does
at this point. It just looks smoother by my eye. I run both XBMC and
myth-frontend on my client boxes and I have a remote command that
switches between them. XBMC for DVD/Blu-Ray content, MythTV for OTA and
DirecTV content. This is not on an AppleTV BTW.
