I think this has become easier with 11.86.
On windows (which I'm not using) it should use the default viewer for
.pdf files. See variable TeX-view-program-selection.
It does use the default viewer, but what if I want AUCTeX to use a
different viewer? Couldn't figure that one out yet ...
