It is basically a set of rules for playing tabletop rpg. Tabletop rpg consists, generally speaking, on a group of players and a game master. The game master tells what is happening and you decide what to do next. This set of rules are sold in the form of books. Besides the rules, it also present the concept for the races, classes and creatures.
In practice, it would sound like that:
You were walking on a thick forest during the night alongside your companions. There was no moonlight or stars in the sky to guide you. After what seemed half an hour, you heard some rustle sounds coming from a nearby bush.
Here is usually when the story pauses to wait for the players to react. Hope I made it a little more clear.
