Variables can be used anywhere. If it is in your main function, in a call to the alert function, globally outside any specific function, that doesn't matter. You can do all the things with variables like the ones described in the tutorial anywhere in your code. That's pretty much one of the main points of the variables' existence in the first place. :-)
