For the christmas items, there are 3 types.
Christmas exchange items: You can take them to an npc in utu at the fieron system and exchange it for 1000 xp, or trade it for money to players. There are some who give really good prices.
Lost documents: If you get a complete set of those, part 1 to part 20 that is, you can trade it to coops at your desired location and let him know that you sent them in the specified topic in the forums, you will get a pretty good reward.
Santa items: Those can be turned in at starbase-51 for 1000 xp and I think a fuel reward in the morning of christmas.
All of the above items as well as any other christmas-related items not belonging to those you can exchange them for festive points, with which you can buy various things. This is done at festive centers scattered throughout the universe.
There are also some great challenges starting from tomorrow to the 7th of January.
Pods are a special type of equipment, or add-on as you put it that is added to ships. By default, you have 10 pod slots, Although the marauder, the ship with which you start, only has one slot available.
