Re: Trying out Linux.
@27, I don't know of a generic "Linux Wiki". I know there's wikis like the Arch Wki -- which is really good. While it is primarily aimed at Arch Linux, its an incredibly good resources for learning how to configure various packages if your willing to adjust it to the distribution you've chosen. Ubuntu and Debian have their own wikis (though I don't know how well-off they are n terms of maintenance). In terms of books for learing practical LInux commands, go for "A Practical Guide to Linux® Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, 3rd Edition" (or any late edition) (ISBN 9780133085082) or Linux Phrasebook, 2nd Edition, ISBN 9780133038590 (or any later edition). Again though, the most helpful resources are the documentation for the programs your using as well as man pages. Thoughs can be viewed with man <program> (i.e. man mv). Though its not meant for "newcomers," its a valuable resource for quickly reminding yourself of how a command works and the syntax of them. Info pages contain full documentation fro commands, i.e.: the coreutils info pages contain excellent documentation on every single command coreutils contains.
The differences between the books I listed is that A Practical Guide to Linux® Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming lists documentation for Unix commands in general (includingMacOS and Linux), whereas the Linux Phrasebook is a nice little pocket book that supplements man pages by easily categorizing tasks into chapters and commands.
