The hinterlands are tricky because you have to skate on ice. Some paths will open up on the ice to the left and right, and because you skate in straight lines, you have to redirect yourself by bumping off of walls or a convenient snowman to find the new pathway that can only be reached via ice. For example, if you have a patch of ice that runs north to south and it opens up to a new area to the right, you could only tell that this was the case by hugging the right hand side wall as you skate from north to south. The right hand wall sound would be there, and then vanish, indicating an opening. To enter into this new direction, you'd probably have to bounce off either a northern or southern wall so that your skating momentum stops, and then go right to the opening. Hope this makes sense. Make sure you hug walls even on ice so that you can hear if it opens up. Some paths, if I recall, are like 1 tile wide, which is really irritating.
