I have been using CCleaner for several years, without any trouble. You have quite a lot of control over what it deletes, and it seems to be doing exactly what it claims. It is not a miracle program, however, since for the most part, it just deletes unneeded files to free up space. If your computer is having performance problems so severe that you need to reset it every so often, then good protection against viruses (an antivirus, but mostly a lot of common sense), more ram and an SSD would solve the problem better.
